  • Remuneration (other than remuneration referred to in item (e)) paid or payable from a single employer, which does not exceed R500 000 and employees’ tax has been deducted or withheld.
  • Interest (other than interest from a tax free investment) from a source in the Republic not exceeding
    • R23,800 in the case of a natural person below the age of 65 years at the end of the year of assessment;
    • R34,500 in the case of a natural person aged 65 years or older at the end of the year of assessment;

  • Dividends that are exempt from normal tax and the natural person was a non-resident throughout the 2025 year of assessment;
  • Amounts received or accrued from a tax-free investment; and
  • A single lump sum benefit received from a pension fund, provident fund, pension preservation fund, provident preservation fund or retirement annuity fund, and tax has been deducted or withheld in terms of a directive issued by the Commissioner.

It must be noted that these provisions do not apply if taxpayers

  • Were paid or granted certain allowances / advances relating to business travel, accommodation or subsistence;
  • Were granted taxable benefits or advantages derived by reason of employment or the holding of any office; or
  • Received or accrued any amount from services rendered outside South Africa.

From the 1 July 2026, SARS will communicate directly with affected taxpayers by SMS and/or email, notifying taxpayers of their auto-assessed tax returns.

If there is a refund due to the taxpayer, it will be paid directly to the taxpayer’s bank account within 72 business hours after the notification. If there is money owing to SARS, it must be paid to SARS’ Bank Account, eFiling or through the SARS MobiApp by the stipulated date.

Taxpayers can access their auto assessed income tax returns through any of SARS’s channels, such as the SARS MobiApp or SARS eFiling, to review and verify the completeness and accuracy of the information that resulted in the auto assessment.

If a taxpayer is satisfied with the auto assessment, they don’t have to do anything further and the process terminates at this point.

If the taxpayer finds that there is missing and/or inaccurate information, pertaining to either income or expenses, which may have affected the outcome, it must be declared to SARS by submitting a tax return to SARS

Any individual who is ordinarily resident (common law concept) in South Africa during the year of assessment or, failing which, meets all three requirements of the physical presence test will be regarded as a resident for tax purposes. To meet the requirements of the physical presence test, that individual must be physically present in South Africa for a period or periods exceeding-

  • 91 days in total during the year of assessment under consideration;
  • 91 days in total during each of the five years of assessment preceding the year of assessment under consideration; and
  • 915 days in total during those five preceding years of assessment.

An individual who fails to meet any one of these three requirements will not satisfy the physical presence test.
